FLOW Day of Service… Rained out…
The beauty of spring is in having lovely blossoming trees and flowers dotted over the landscape. The sight fills me with happiness knowing that the cold and darkness of winter has faded with this incredible burst of color. However, the foliage needs rain and we have had plenty during this week of Project FLOW Service Events.
I traveled to Tug Valley High School located in Naugatuck, West Virginia with the purpose of volunteering to plant trees, only it rained! Rain, rain go away!
The rain did not disturb the FLOW youth at the high school for they had a plan. They rescheduled the tree planting and focused on developing posters for the upcoming Splash Festival in May. Splash Day is an annual, day-long water festival in which Project FLOW high school students provide hands-on learning watershed activities for elementary and middle school students.
So instead of youth getting soiled, they are gluing, cutting and creating informative posters. As always these trip I take are always educational. I learned that catfish can grow to be bigger than a man. This is the fodder of which legends are made. I mean how do you think Moth Man got started? However most of the posters focused on more mundane but neverless important facts about indigenous aquatic animals such as turtles, frogs, crayfish and other fish.
There are a few students that have quite the artistic touch in creating these posters. I should not be surprised as the winning design for the FLOW Day of Service T-Shirt was submitted by a Tug Valley High School student. Go Panthers!

Big Laurel Learning Center is funded by the Learn and Serve Community-based Service-Learning Grant through Volunteer West Virginia. Big Laurel has partnered with Lenore K-8 and Tug Valley High Schools to offer service-learning programs to Lenore’s 5th graders and Tug Valley science students.
