FODC Youth Advisory Board Update

Kid's Day 2009

The Friends of Deckers Creek Youth Advisory Board participated in Mainstreet Morgantown’s annual Kid’s Day in downtown Morgantown on Saturday, July 18th. Since receiving Project FLOW funding in 2006, YAB has lead eco-crafts for over 200 kids of all ages at Kid’s Day. Over 200 kids visited the YAB booth this year located on Wall Street. YAB members Rachel, Evan, Tristan, and Brett showed youth how to make a soil baby, YAB’s version of a chia-pet. Kids add grass seed and soil to a nylon stocking, tie off, and place in a plastic cup. Googly eyes, fuzzy noses, and mouths are added for flair to the bald babies. With sunlight and clean water kids will watch their babies grow goofy grass hair in the next few weeks. YAB also uses this opportunity to educate parents and recruit older youth to join FODC’s core group of under 18 volunteers.

Through the end of July, YAB members will be working to install sculptures and an outdoor classroom at the new Deckers Creek Outdoor Learning Park along the Rail-Trail in Sabraton. Three sculptures created by BOPARC Arts in the Park students will be incorporated into this greenspace by fall 2009 including a 44′ x 18′ mosaic mural depicting humans morphing into butterflies. Other features of the site include: native perennial plantings, rain garden, walking trails, benches, and signage. Special thanks to the many supporters of this project who have collectively donated over $40,000 in supplies, in-kind services, and cash!
